Cadillac to offer V-Series or Platinum trim on every model

01/13/2010, 9:49 AMBY ANDREW GANZ

In order to take Cadillac in two directions – performance and opulence – each model line in the brand will get one of two range-topping models, a luxury-lined Platinum or a handling and speed-oriented V-Series.

The announcement was made earlier this week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit as Cadillac unveiled its XTS concept car, which clearly previews the single-model replacement for the lame-duck DTS and STS. The large XTS, with its front or all-wheel-drive platform, will see its lineup capped with a Platinum model.

Cadillac currently offers Platinum trim on the DTS and the Escalade, where features like intricate inlaid wood trim, suede headliners, upgraded full leather upholstery and a full complement of standard features are included.

The STS, however, was once offered with V-Series trim, including a 469-horsepower supercharged V8, but sales were middling at best and General Motors pulled the plug on the model last year. It’s expected that the CTS will carry on the torch as Cadillac’s lone V-Series model for a while.

Cadillac did expand its V-Series lineup in Detroit with the introduction of the CTS-V coupe, which goes on sale in the summer of 2010. The automaker has not confirmed a CTS-V wagon, although prototypes have been spotted in Detroit and Europe.

Considering the success of the CTS, would both a V and Platinum trim CTS make sense?

Maybe a V-Platinum. The only negative of the CTS V-series (IMHO) is the rather gray and somber interior. A V-series w/ a Platinum interior w/ different color and wood options would be very cool. High performance + high luxury = ultimate.

Maybe, depends on if any of the lux stuff would be adding significant weight or getting in the way or defeating the purpose of the performance stuff. CTS-V is sweet simply for performance, and IMO nothing should take away from it. More lux without getting in the way of that is fine.

I still love the vid of the CTS-V with some not really that extreme mods at the drag strip, getting a call from OnStar because it pulled such strong G's that the computer thought there was an accident. :)
