Whitacre to be named GM's permanent CEO

Chrissie Thompson

Automotive News -- January 25, 2010 - 9:34 am ET

DETROIT -- Ed Whitacre, General Motors Co.'s chairman, will become permanent CEO, a source with direct knowledge of the plan said.

GM has planned press conference for 11:30 a.m. EST to announce the move, the person said, declining to be identified because GM has not announced Whitacre's new role.

CNBC earlier reported the switch for Whitacre, 68, who has served as interim CEO since Dec. 1.

At the press conference, Whitacre will “provide updates on GM business activities,” GM said in a statement.

Whitacre became interim CEO after the GM board ousted Fritz Henderson. The automaker has been conducting an international search for a permanent leader.

Whitacre was named chairman of GM's board of directors in June, while the automaker was in bankruptcy, replacing interim Chairman Kent Kresa.

Whitacre last served as a CEO at AT&T and its predecessor companies from 1990 to 2007. He retired after seeing the largest U.S. telecommunications service provider through seven large acquisitions over a decade.

Anyone else find it ironic that a year ago everyone said GM needed a shake up, and now their keeping Big Ed in an attempt to create some stability?

I'm glad Big Ed is sticking around, he is a no bull $h! kinda guy, that just what GM needs. They already have Lutz, Stevens, Welburn, and Ruess safeguarding the product, no they need someone to take the rest of the operation and start kicking ass and taking names. Its also a plus that the position of COO and President isn't coming back as I never understood what the purpose of having so many guys running the show was.

Well, they shook up the old structure, have had a lot of shuffling and changes, and now the new structure is (hopefully) settling into a stable organisation for the future.

Big Ed is running the show!

You know I have to do a song for "Big Ed".

Diana Ross

The Boss

Big Ed Is The Boss

Fancy that

Old GM thought they had a degree of control

In business and how run

They thought it ought to be fun

They had a one step plan to prove it

Guide in their pocket for fools

Folly and fun

Big Ed had to show them the one thing

Big Ed is so right

So right

Old GM thought they could turn brands and cars

On and off

They were so sure

So sure ( old GM was so sure)

But Big Ed taught GM

Who was who was who was the boss

(Taught GM who was who was the boss)

I'd defy

Anyone who claimed that GM

Didn't control whatever moved in the showroom

They would tempt

Touch delight

Just because you fell for it

Why should they feel like doing right

Big Ed had to show them one thing:

Big Ed is so right

So right

Old GM thought they could turn brands and cars

On and off

They were so sure

So sure ( old GM was so sure)

But Big Ed taught GM

Who was who was who was the boss

(Taught GM who was who was the boss)

Who who who who

yeah who who who

yeah yeah

Big Ed taught GM

Taught GM

Taught GM

Taught GM

Big Ed is so right

So right

Old GM thought they could turn brands and cars

On and off

They were so sure

So sure ( old GM was so sure)

But Big Ed taught GM

Who was who was who was the boss

(Taught GM who was who was the boss)

Stood right up in the old GM executives faces

Big Ed taught GM

Taught GM who was the boss

Big Ed showed Fritz who's giving the orders

Big Ed showed Fritz who's running the show

Big Ed taught GM

Taught GM who was the boss

Big Ed showed Fritz who's giving the orders

Big Ed showed Fritz who's running the show

Stood right up in the old GM executives faces

Big Ed taught GM

Taught GM who was the boss
