GM Foundation donates 30 Chevrolet pickups, cash to Haiti

While the rest of us mail checks, the General Motors Foundation is doing a lot more to help the earthquake victims of Haiti. It i donating 30 GMC trucks to the relief effort.

Two of the trucks arrived in Miami yesterday, site of this year's Super Bowl, and became props for the NFL Little Haiti Outreach Event held at the Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center.

Besides the trucks, the GM Foundation is giving cash:

It's contribution for Haitian Relief is $100,000. An additional $250,000 was raised on Jan. 23, by the auction of a limited-edition Chevrolet Corvette at the 39th annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction. Additional donations are being collected at U.S. auto shows. All monies for Haiti relief efforts will be presented to the American Red Cross.

"Everyone in America has been affected in some way by this tragedy," said Susan Docherty, GM's vice president for sales and a foundation Board member. "That includes GM employees, families and friends. GMC and the NFL are visiting the heart of the Haitian community in South Florida to show our support."

GM says the Sierra pickup trucks arrived with supplies such as tarps and tents donated from Florida GMC dealers and their communities. The pickups will arrive in Haiti with a couple weeks as part of a coordinated effort of the GM Foundation and the William J. Clinton Foundation. There is a dire need for trucks to transport supplies to survivors. The William J. Clinton Foundation is covering delivery costs of shipping the vehicles to Haiti. Former President Clinton currently serves as U.N. Special Envoy for Haiti.

GM has always done good things like this. At least they will be getting good trucks instead of the Toyota stuff they typically drive. I am betting they are reg cab long box 4WD with 4.3L V6. Hope they can be put to good use.
