Spied: Buick Regal GS prototype

02/09/2010, 5:06 PMBY MARK KLEIS

Leftlane first brought you live photos of a Buick Regal GS “concept” at the Detroit Auto Show last month, but now we have acquired photos of what appears to be a nearly production-ready Regal GS on U.S. soil. At the Detroit Auto Show GM said the Regal GS was still just a concept, but we have reason to believe this concept will be coming to a showroom floor near you.

The Buick Regal GS concept was based very heavily on the Opel Insignia OPC – a hopped up sedan boasting a 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 good for 325 horsepower and and zero-to-62 sprint of under six seconds.

GM said that the Buick Regal GS, if it entered production, would not share the turbocharged engine found in the OPC. The Regal GS concept, for example, instead opted for a 255 hp, 295 lb-ft. of torque, direct-injected, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ecotec engine. Although the output falls short of the massive 325 hp number found in the OPC, the Regal GS should still find plenty of motivation with just shy of 300 hp.

One thing is for sure, the prototype caught in these pictures is certainly not a normal Regal – as evidenced by the sporty lower fascia and the tell-tale “Turbo” badging on the trunk.
