Volkswagen recalls 200,000 cars in Brazil

February 11, 2010 15:31 CET

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Volkswagen AG is recalling close to 200,000 units of its new-generation Gol and Voyage models built in Brazil for the local market. The cars are being recalled due to insufficient grease in rear wheel bearings in some cases.

"The rear wheels could lock if used continuously with insufficiently greased bearings. In extreme cases the wheel could work loose and potentially cause an accident," the automaker said on Thursday.

Vehicles produced after July 2009 are not affected, it said.

The Gol is the top-selling car in Brazil, which is VW's third-largest market after China and Germany. In 2009, VW group sold 688,300 cars in Brazil, an increase of 8.7 percent from 2008.

A relatively common occurrence due to the extreme complexity of most modern automobiles, recalls have grabbed headlines recently after Toyota Motor Corp.'s image as quality champion was hit by a recall of more than 8.5 million vehicles.

On Wednesday, Honda Motor Co. expanded its own recall to almost 950,000 vehicles.
