Toyota to temporarily halt production in France, UK

February 22, 2010 09:31 CET

TOKYO (Reuters) – Toyota Motor Corp. said on Monday it will cut back production in France temporarily as the carmaker looks to cope with the sales impact of its massive global recalls.

The world's largest carmaker also confirmed plans, originally announced last week, to extend a planned temporary production stoppage at its two British plants due partly to the impact on its sales from the recalls.

Toyota has recalled more than 8.5 million vehicles globally in recent months for problems including sticky accelerators, accelerators that can be pinned down by loose floormats, and a braking system glitch affecting its hybrid models.

Toyota said it would cut back some production at its plant in France between March and April. It did not specify the number of days or the amount of lost output at the plant, which has an annual production capacity of about 270,000 cars.

Toyota has also moved to slow down production in the United States, where it is grappling with weaker sales.
