The first Opel Ampera prototype is getting a road test in a 600km drive from the carmaker's headquarters in Russelsheim, near Frankfurt, Germany, to the Geneva auto show in Switzerland.

The Ampera prototype started the journey on Sunday covering the first 60 km (40 miles) powered by energy stored in its lithium-ion battery.

After this initial electric stint, the Ampera's internal combustion engine generated electricity to drive the car's wheels for the remainder of the journey.

The first – and only - stop to refuel the vehicle was planned after about 480 km (300 miles).

The Ampera is Opel's version of General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet Volt extended range plug-in hybrid. The Volt launches in selected U.S. markets later this year.

Opel plans to start production of the Ampera at the end of 2011.
