AT&T veteran takes top communications spot at GM

Robert Snell / The Detroit News

General Motors Co. today replaced its top spokesman with another former colleague of Chairman and Chief Executive Edward Whitacre Jr. at AT&T.

Selim Bingol, a senior vice president and senior partner at communications firm Fleishman-Hillard, previously worked as senior vice president of corporate communications at AT&T. He was a vice president at SBC Communications before joining AT&T in 2004.

The hire is the latest evidence that Whitacre, former chairman and CEO of AT&T, is surrounding himself with trusted allies as he pushes to transform GM.

"Selim brings a wealth of experience to this position and his deep and diverse background will serve us well as we accelerate our efforts to design, build and sell the world's best vehicles," Whitacre said. "I have worked with Selim over the years on several complex communication issues, and he has my trust and respect."

Bingol, 49, replaces Chris Preuss, who was named vice president and president of OnStar on Tuesday.

In December, Whitacre named two new lobbyists with ties to his former company, AT&T, to replace long-time GM lobbyist Ken Cole.

Bingol will be responsible for GM's global communications, including products and brands, public policy, executive support, and internal communications, according to a GM statement today.
