General Motors Co. names Martin Apfel to oversee GM’s business in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) markets.

He becomes president of GM South East Asia Operations, General Motors (Thailand) Ltd. and Chevrolet Sales (Thailand) Ltd., effective immediately.

Apfel, who most recently served as GM’s executive director-global manufacturing strategy and planning, replaces Steve Carlisle, who now is vice president of U.S. sales operations.

GM International Operations President Tim Lee says in a statement Apfel’s appointment is in recognition of the growing importance of GM’s global operations. He says Carlisle did an outstanding job putting GM’s ASEAN operations on a solid footing for continued growth.

“Martin Apfel brings a wealth of experience in production and management to his new position,” Lee says. “He will keep up the momentum for GM in the key emerging markets of ASEAN.”

Apfel began his career with GM’s Adam Opel GmbH units in Germany.

He has held several key positions in Europe, including director of Opel’s Bochum plants, president of Opel Eisenach (the model for GM’s plant in Rayong, Thailand), and president of the board and managing director of Opel Portugal.

As executive director of global manufacturing strategy and planning, he had responsibilities for GM’s production operations around the world and represented manufacturing in GM’s global product planning and development.
