U.S. Justice Department files lawsuit against Daimler for conspiracy, falsifying records

03/23/2010, 2:53 PMBY DREW JOHNSON

Daimler AG – the German parent of Mercedes-Benz – has been charged with violating United States bribery laws. The suit against Daimler claims the German automaker bribed officials in 22 countries over the last ten years to secure important business deals.

According to the suit filed by the United States Justice Department, Daimler “engaged in a long-standing practice of paying bribes to ‘foreign officials.’” Russia, Turkey, Egypt, China, Nigeria and Iraq, among others, were named in the lawsuit.

Per the court filing, the Justice Department is charging Daimler with two counts — conspiracy, and falsifying books and records under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Although Daimler has yet to comment on the charges, the U.S. claims the German company bribed foreign officials with tens of millions of dollars in order to secure government vehicle contracts estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

“In some cases, Daimler wired these improper payments to U.S. bank accounts or to the foreign bank accounts of U.S. shell companies in order to transmit the bribe,” the court documents said.

Hearings on the matter are scheduled to commence on April 1.
