COLOGNE -- Opel CEO Nick Reilly has promised his German dealers that the automaker will press ahead with the development of the minicar they have been wanting.

Thomas Bieling, spokesman for VDOH, the German Opel and Chevrolet dealer association, confirmed the news after Reilly addressed a closed meeting of the group's members.

Dealers have been asking for a car positioned below the Corsa subcompact.

At the Geneva auto show, Reilly expressed the hope that Opel could introduce a minicar in 2012 and an electric version in 2014.

Reilly also assured the gathering that all future Opel models will be developed in Germany.

"He explained that the German stamp will be visible on all new models," Bieling said.

The VDOH strongly supported Opel's sale to Canadian supplier Magna International Inc. But after General Motors Co. decided to keep Opel, the association has changed its view.

"Today, I think remaining with GM offers better prospects for Opel," Bieling said.
