Toyota establishes U.S.-based Quality Task Force

03/25/2010, 3:46 PMBY DREW JOHNSON

In a move to mend consumer confidence and improve overall quality and safety, Toyota has announced the official formation of a Quality Task Force. The United States-base task force will ensure North America has a bigger say in Toyota’s operations.

The newly established Quality Task Force will be lead by Steve St. Angelo, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America Inc. in Erlanger, Kentucky. Additionally, Dino Triantafyllos, vice president of quality in Erlanger, has been named to a new position that seeks to improve how Toyota handles safety issues.

“The aim of our new quality task force is to assure that all of us in North America listen and respond to the voice of the customer,” Triantafyllos said in the statement. “My primary responsibility is to assure that we utilize all of the data at our disposal and that we promptly decide the appropriate action.”

Previously, recalls in any global market were handled by Toyota’s headquarters in Japan – a practice that was berated by government officials earlier this month in Washington. However, the Quality Task Force should ensure the North American market has a greater say in future safety recalls.
