VW confirms diesel powertrain for Passat replacement

03/31/2010, 5:16 PMBY ANDREW GANZ

Volkswagen of North America CEO Stefan Jacoby announced today at the New York International Auto Show that the as-of-yet-unnamed replacement for the automaker’s Passat North American flagship sedan will offer a diesel powertrain in the United States and Canada.

The Passat replacement, which has been configured primarily for the North American market, will be assembled in Chattanooga, Tennessee. So far, VW hasn’t given any indication of a name for the car, simply calling it the “New Mid-Size Sedan,” or NMS.

VW will likely select a more powerful engine than the current 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI offered in the diesel. Look for upwards of 150 horsepower in North American configuration, which will probably debut a little after the NMS is fully unwrapped later in 2011.
