2012 VW Touareg Hybrid bows at NY show

03/31/2010, 5:35 PMBY DREW JOHNSON

Volkswagen has unveiled its 2012 Touareg Hybrid at the 2010 New York Auto Show. Based on the same platform and hybrid system that recently debuted in the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid, the latest Touareg model promises a healthy boost in overall fuel economy.

Like its Porsche counterpart, the Touareg Hybrid uses an Audi-sourced 333 horsepower supercharged 3.0L V6. The hybrid model also adds a 47 horsepower electric motor, bringing total output to a robust 380 horsepower. The Touareg is capable of speeds up to 30mph on electric-only power.

Power is route through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, with the top two gears reserved for overdrive. VW says eighth gear reduces engine RPMs by 34 percent compared to sixth gear, resulting in greater fuel economy. Other fuel saving features include automatic start/stop and a system that decouples the engine from the driveline to improve overall economy under certain driving conditions.

The standard version of the all-new Touareg will arrive for the 2011 model year, but those wanting a more fuel efficient package will have to wait until 2011 for the 2012 Touareg Hybrid to hit U.S. dealership. Pricing is expect to hit near the $60,000 mark.

I'm not a VW fan, but this is a nice evolution of the first gen. This new gen has some subtle sculpturing that adds a greater degree of visual interest. Nice.
