Report: Daimler, Renault-Nissan near reaching alliance

04/02/2010, 10:37 AMBY MARK KLEIS

A new report suggests that Daimler AG and the Renault-Nissan alliance have reached the final stages of negotiation in regards to creating a partnership based largely on the development of small car technology. The alliance will reportedly result in an exchange of shareholdings between the automakers.

According to the Wall Street Journal, inside sources say that Daimler AG is negotiating with the existing alliance of Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. in order to create a new alliance to develop small vehicles.

Leftlane has been following the developments of a possible relationship between Daimler and Renault-Nissan, with the most recent report suggesting a partnership for small engines and batteries on March 23, 2010. The report by the WSJ suggests that talks are progressing as previously reported, with inside sources suggesting cross-shareholdings of somewhere between 3 and 5 percent between Daimler and the Renault-Nissan alliance.

The partnership will reportedly be centered around the development of new, small cars for Daimler in order to be more competitive with BMW’s MINI brand, their new and upcoming small offerings and the other German rival, Audi, who is also bringing a strong lineup of small cars to market as well. In exchange, Nissan hopes to gain large engine technology, hybrid-engine technology and diesel engine expertise from Daimler.

The report also suggest that the partnership would result in extensive collaborated research into fuel-efficient technologies in the future.
