Save Hummer rally set for next week?

04/05/2010, 6:11 PMBY DREW JOHNSON

General Motors has already begun the wind down process of its Hummer brand, but the newly formed Capital & Labor International Coalition is attempting to save the off-road marque. CLIC has announced a “Save Hummer Motors in America Summit”, set to take place on April 11 in Chicago.

Much like the “Save Saab” initiative that aided in Spyker’s decision to buy the Swedish automaker, CLIC is hopeful the Summit will spur GM to sell the Hummer brand. It’s not clear, however, if the management firm has any interest in purchasing the marque itself.

“We have researched the GM/Hummer situation for the past month,” noted Thane Ritchie, who is Chairman of CLIC, “and we believe that Hummer can be saved and continue to offer great jobs and products to America and globally.”

According to CLIC’s press release, the President and CFO of UAW Local 2166 – the Local that staffs the Hummer H3 plant in Louisiana – have been confirmed to attend the event, with invites to all of Hummer’s executives – including CEO Jim Taylor – still outstanding. U.S. Senator Roland Burris has also been contact to participate in securing the capital needed to resurrect the brand, but has decided to sit on the sidelines until the Summit is over.

CLIC’s announcement about the Summit was made on April 1, so be sure to check back on April 11 to see if the “Save Hummer Motors in America Summit” is actually legitimate.

Report: Chicago-area 'Save Hummer' rally planned for April 11

by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Apr 5th 2010 at 3:32PM

Not so fast, Captain Planet. Hummer may be on its last leg at the moment, but fans of the brand aren't going to let their favorite earth-roaming SUVs go down without a fight. Capital & Labor International Coalition, a newly-minted organization, thinks it has all the answers to the brand's woes, and has scheduled a summit to help save Hummer here in the states on April 11.

This assemblage could be more than just a few fans with posters. CLIC has invited everyone from shareholders to Hummer's CEO and United Auto Workers leaders. Thane Ritchie, chairman of the organization, said CLIC has taken a good hard look at the General Motors/Hummer issue and there may be another option out there other than just turning off the lights for good.

Members of the group have even invited Senator Rolland Burris (D-Illinois) to help out as well. Burris will be acting as a liaison between the coalition and the federal government, especially when it comes to getting any aid for the brand. In the meantime, the Save Hummer in America rally will be held next week in Chicago. Hey, it worked for Saab, right?
