Spy Shots: ’08 Jaguar XKR

The new XK reaches for 400-hp heights.

by Hans Lehmann/Hidden Image (2006-02-06)

Jaguar launched its new XK at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show-but there's clearly more to come.

These are first photos of the XKR, shown here as a convertible prototype during cold weather testing. The differences from the stock XK are clear: there's an altered front end with big air intakes, air intakes in the hood and four big exhaust pipes at the rear end, along with larger wheel arches and a taller rear spoiler.

With its newly bulging hood, the XKR is taking aim at the BMW M6 and Mercedes SL 55 AMG. Backing up its claim is a supercharged 4.2-ltier V-8 delivering 400 hp.

Both the XKR coupe and convertible are expected to make their public debut at the Paris Motor Show this fall and to be in the showrooms in 2007.

So at a time when Cadillac, Mercedes, and BMW have upped the performance ante with the XLR, SL, and 6-Series performance variants, Jaguar decides to stick with the weak (in comparsion) 400hp supercharged 4.2? Most disappointing, Jag.

I still can't stand the grille treatment. Heritage or not, its been cribbed so many times by others its not worth replicating. It looks LaCrosse-y now.

Too rice-y.

Too Photoshop-y.

400 horsepower doesn't sound like much, but the XK weighs a lot less than its competitors. The 390-horsepower 4-door XJR gets to sixty in under 5 seconds... this could very well do it in 4.5-ish.
