Some of the most desirable Chevrolet Camaros are the factory-made replicas to celebrate the pony car's inclusion in the racing world as a pace car. And it looks like we have yet another pace car rep to add to our growing list of potential collectibles with General Motors' announcement that it will build 200 or fewer 2010 Chevy Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Limited Edition models.

Each of the Pace Car models will be based on an SS with the RS appearance package. A 400 horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine will be mated up with a six-speed automatic transmission (what, no manual?), with power put to the ground through 20-inch polished aluminum wheels. A throwback-style front grille recalls the old '67 Pace Cars, and the whole shebang will be painted in Inferno Orange, including the engine cover.

Now, for the most important bits:
  • Premium floor mats with accent colors
  • 2010 Indianapolis 500 event logo decal on both doors and embroidered on driver and passenger headrests
  • 2010 Indianapolis 500 event logo badges on front fenders
Price? $41,950 (including an $850 Destination Freight Charge). Get the rest of the details in the press release after the break.

GM confirms retail sales for Chevrolet Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Car

04/06/2010, 3:46 PMBY DREW JOHNSON

General Motors has announced it will offer a limited number of 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Cars for retail sales. Chevrolet officially unveiled the Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Car last year, with the car making its first public appearance at the Indianapolis Auto Show.

Based on the 2010 Camaro 2SS model with an RS appearance package, the Indy Pace Car version includes a 400 horsepower 6.2L V8 backed by a six-speed automatic transmission, 20-inch wheels, White Pearl rally stripes, unique front grille and plenty of Indianapolis 500 badges and logos.

“We set out to build a collectible vehicle that will appeal to the die-hard Camaro and Indianapolis 500 fan,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President, Chevrolet Marketing. “We believe we’ve done just that with the 2010 Chevy Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Limited Edition.”

GM says “up to” 200 examples of the Camaro Pace Car will be available through 187 of the company’s top-selling Camaro dealers. Pricing for the Indy Pace Car replica will start from $41,950, including an $850 destination charge. The 2010 model marks the sixth Camaro to pace the Indy 500, although retail replicas were only offered in 1969, 1982 and 1993.

Not Hugger, Inferno.

As pace cars go, this is a nice package except for the glaring omission of a manual trans.
