Report: VW Delays Niche Models Because of Quality Concerns

Date posted: 02-07-2006

WOLFSBURG, Germany — Still smarting from delaying the launch of its Eos cabriolet, VW will be three months behind schedule on an SUV version of the Golf as the company strives to address quality concerns.

The SUV version of the Golf, which various reports have said will be called either Beduin or Marrakech, will be delayed by three months from August to November 2007, according to German motor industry journal Automobilwoche.

The SUV delay follows a similar holdup for the Eos Golf-based cabriolet, originally scheduled for spring this year but now not scheduled for Job 1 until the fall. This delay is apparently a result of concerns about the quality of the roof system. According to the paper, quality worries are also thought to be at the root of the Golf SUV delay.

VW boss Wolfgang Bernhard reportedly wants VW's products to be built to the same standard as Toyota's. He told Automobilwoche that he believes quality and efficiency are the keys to Toyota's success.

What this means to you: Better to get it right and late than face costly recalls; look at how badly Mercedes-Benz has suffered from quality problems.
