The production run for the new 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition will be capped at just 500 cars so each of these models will be something special, especially for diehard muscle car and Corvette fans. Too bad that the very first of the cars has already been sold at the Barrett-Jackson vehicle auctions, which took place in Palm Beach, Florida on April 3.

The first of the 500 retail 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition coupes was sold for a staggering $297,000. In addition to this, the winning bidder also receives the opportunity to tour GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan, home of the hand-built LS7 and LS9 engines found in the Z06 and ZR1 respectively. It doesn’t end there, however, as the winner will also have the opportunity to watch the car going down the line at the famed Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

If you missed our previous story, the new special edition Corvette was designed as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Corvette’s first race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As such, it continues the technology transfer between the production Corvette and motorsports with a number of racing developed parts making their way onto the car.

Some of its special items include Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, black wheels measuring 19 inches up front and 20 inches in the rear and wrapped with Michelin PS2 tires, Magnetic Selective Ride Control active suspension, and a host of carbon-fiber accessories.

A number of other high-profile Corvettes have passed under the hammer at the various Barrett-Jackson vehicle auctions held around the country. At the Scottsdale, Arizona auction in 2008 the first Corvette ZR1 sold for $1,000,000 and most recently a limited edition Corvette Z06 (number 427 of 427 produced) garnered $200,000, all of which was donated to the Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.
