DETROIT -- General Motors Co. has named clinical psychologist Cynthia Telles as a director, giving the automaker a 13-member board.

Telles, 57, is on the faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she leads a psychosocial clinic for Spanish speakers. She previously served on the board of railway company Burlington Northern Santa Fe Co., where Whitacre is a director.

GM has had an even 12 directors on its board since it lost Fritz Henderson in December, GM spokeswoman Noreen Pratscher said. Henderson was ousted as CEO. Whitacre chairs the board. Patricia Russo, former CEO of French communications company Alcatel-Lucent, serves as lead independent director.

Some of the board members have worked with Telles, Pratscher said, although the spokeswoman could not immediately name those directors.

Telles serves on two other boards: Americas United Bank, California’s largest Hispanic-owned bank; and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, whose Kaiser Permanente is the largest nonprofit health plan in the United States. She previously sat on the board of Sanwa Bank California.
