GMT900s now Acceptable in Crash

1 post in this topic

I was checking out the IIHS website, and I noticed the Silverado now improved from "Poor" in side crash protection to "Acceptable", which is just one grade away from "Good." It's odd that there was no corresponding press release about the re-test, from either IIHS or GM, as is usually the case. Kudos to GM for at least making the change mid-cycle, as the previous score was pretty embarrassing for a vehicle perceived to be safe and solid. B-pillar intrusion into the passenger cell reduced by 8.5 cm. GM also made curtain airbags standard, added side torso airbags, and added energy absorbing foam to the door panels.

OLD SILVERADO w/ optional curtain airbags (2007-2009):

Driver head/neck: ACCEPTABLE

Driver torso: POOR

Driver pelvis/leg: GOOD

Head protection: GOOD

Rear passenger head/neck: GOOD

Rear passenger torso: MARGINAL

Rear passenger pelvis/leg: GOOD

Head protection: GOOD

Structure/safety cage: POOR

Overall: POOR

NEW SILVERADO w/ standard curtain and torso airbags (2010+):

Driver head/neck: GOOD

Driver torso: ACCEPTABLE

Driver pelvis/leg: GOOD

Head protection: GOOD

Rear passenger head/neck: GOOD

Rear passenger torso: MARGINAL

Rear passenger pelvis/leg: GOOD

Head protection: GOOD

Structure/safety cage: ACCEPTABLE

Overall: ACCEPTABLE

Previously I would only recommend to friends the F-150 ("Good" ratings all around), but these safety improvements now put the Silverado and Sierra back into consideration. I wonder when the IIHS will release roof strength ratings... that should be pretty interesting as well.
