Toyota recalls 600,000 1998-2010 Sienna minivans

BY MARK KLEIS

Toyota has announced a voluntary safety recall regarding certain 1998 to 2010 Sienna minivans. The recall is based on a cable that retains the spare tire, which can become corroded and fail, resulting in the spare tire falling out from underneath the vehicle.

Toyota has announced a voluntary safety recall in order to replace the cable which is responsible for holding the spare tire under the minivan. The recall affects as many as 600,000 2WD Sienna minivans, model years 1998 through 2010.

According to Toyota, the cable may become corroded and eventually fail, resulting in the complete release of the spare tire, and posing an accident risk to vehicles following the affected minivans. Toyota says the problem is likely only present on vehicles traveling in areas with high uses of road salt.

Toyota does not yet have a solution for the problem, but is advising customers to visit their local dealers and have the cable inspected. Toyota plans to send a secondary notice once a fix has been procured.
