Toyota stops Lexus GX 460 production

04/16/2010, 5:26 PMBY DREW JOHNSON

Toyota has announced it has temporarily stopped production of it Lexus GX 460 luxury SUV. Toyota announced a global sales freeze of the GX 460 on Thursday after Consumer Reports labeled the SUV as a “safety risk.”

A direct result of the sales stoppage, the GX 460’s plant is scheduled to remain idle until April 28. Toyota spokesman Mieko Iwasaki said the production halt is intended to keep GX 460 supply in line with demand while the automaker sorts out the SUV’s safety problems.

Consumer Reports put the GX 460 on its ‘do not buy’ list following a test that showed the SUV’s stability control system kicked in too late during emergency maneuvers, causing the vehicle’s rear end to swing out.

Toyota engineers and U.S. regulators are currently working to fix the problem, but no timeline has been given for the GX 460’s market return. The GX 460 safety problems are just another black eye for Toyota, which has recalled 8.5 million vehicles over the last several months.
