Sources: Fiat to bring four-door 500 to North America

04/19/2010, 9:48 AMBY ANDREW GANZ

Fiat intends to introduce a four-door version of its 500 minicar for the 2011 model year – and if sources at the Italian automaker are correct, the practicality-oriented compact car will make its way to North America.

The Italian automaker’s CEO, Sergio Marchionne, is set to outline the company’s five year plan on Wednesday, at which time a more detailed announcement of what Fiat products will make it to North America is likely to be made.

A four-door 500, as awkward as it might sound stylistically, will compete against the enlarged Mini range that includes the extended-length Clubman and the four-door, SUV-esque Countryman. The design is expected to mostly mirror the current two-door hatchback’s retro look – with the addition of two doors and an extended back seat area.

The longer and wider four-door 500 would be built exclusively at Fiat’s Mirafiori plant in Italy, while North American-spec two-doors will be built at a Chrysler plant in Toluca, Mexico beginning in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Stay tuned for more updates later this week.
