Anthony Graber meets the Maryland State Police – Click above to watch video after the jump

We won't be crossing the Maryland State Police any time soon. As Anthony Graber recently found out, exceeding the speed limit and showboating on your bike can easily end with having a gun pulled on you, your personal property confiscated and a trip to the clink. Graber was enjoying the weather on his bike, admittedly speeding and popping wheelies, all the time recording his exploits via a helmet cam. When he slowed for a stoplight, a car pulled in front of the bike, and the driver exited the vehicle with a gun drawn, demanding Graber get off of his motorcycle.

Talk about needing a new set of leathers. As it turned out, the gun-wielding individual was a Maryland state trooper, though he took his sweet time letting Graber know that little piece of information. Here's where things go from bad to worse. Graber gets his citation and heads home, only to have the state police show up a few days later with a warrant for four computers, two laptops and his camera. Why? Turns out there's a law against audibly recording someone without their consent. It's a felony.

We have a hard time imagining any judge standing behind the police on this one, especially considering the fact that Graber was in public and the officer in question was brandishing his firearm. Some might think the state police were simply trying to hush up the possibility of even more bad press after that whole severe beating of a University of Maryland student last month. Hit the jump for the video.

65 years ago we saved most of Europe including the German civilians from the Nationalist Socialist Gestapo....

Now our Government has decided to give the Stalin & Hitler a run for their money.

Anyone who thinks that cops are wholesome and good natured people is kidding themselves.

Yes, but surely there are standards of professionalism that should be met when "on duty" as a cop.

To set the record straight, it's not the State Police who are in hot water over the student beating that happened during the riot in College Park; rather, it's the Prince George's County PD. And there's still a pretty intense discussion around campus/the area over what really happened.

Still, the State and County PDs around here seem to exist only as revenue generators rather than real law enforcement.

Whaaat? Every person I've met who bears the badge is nothing but good-natured and professional. There's always the few, who end up tarnishing the rest.

Why this cop felt the need to take out his gun is beyond me. The motorcyclist was speeding and popping wheelies: both are dangerous to himself and other drivers around him, so he should have been the asshole here.

Doesn't surprise me. A lot of cops seem to me to be nothing more than armed facist thugs.

On the other hand, I have several friends from high school that are cops in Florida (county and state highway patrol)...they were jocks in school, but well adjusted and decent people AFAIK.

You're in Canada. Go to the American Midwest and it's a whole different demeanor. Think: high school rejects who never got over themselves or their issues.

Well, it's gotten pretty dumb up North too. Only ours seem to love indiscriminate Tasering as opposed to brandishing guns. But again, that's the minority, and I feel really bad for the rest.

Either way, I hope that the cop in the video gets a reprimand for being an idiot, and the whole department catches hell for trying to threaten a citizen who has (rightfully) exposed their bad attitude.

Way to generalize and show your ignorance. There are plenty of good, honorable police officers. Unfortunately there are also some lousy ones. To label them all either way is stupid and inconsiderate to the good ones who work hard to protect our towns & cities.

Cops are like anything else... You get some excellent and some terrible. Too bad it's the terrible one's that always make the news.

Interesting to note though that I recently read a survey which concluded that most high IQ cops tend to quit after 1-2 years because the job is so routine and boring.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but it is food for thought as to how we could further elevate the performance of our law enforcement.
