Ford's on the edge of a new Explorer

Automotive News -- May 10, 2010 - 12:01 am ET

Ford dealers got a sneak peek at the next-generation Explorer at a dealer meeting last week in Detroit, and by all accounts they liked what they (briefly) saw. But now, after the meeting, they say it is unclear when the redesigned model will go on sale.

Company executives told them the new Explorer might debut as a 2012 model. Ford reportedly will launch the redesigned vehicle late this year as a 2011. But to qualify as a 2012, it would have to wait until January.

"This now puts the launch date in question," says a dealer who attended the meeting but asked not to be identified.

A Ford spokesman says the Explorer is not delayed.

"We have not announced the model year for the Explorer," wrote Ford's Jay Ward in an e-mail to Automotive News. "I can confirm that the vehicle goes into production in 2010 and that there are no delays in the program."

Ward said Ford will reveal the Explorer to the public this summer.

Dealers who got to see it last week say it is rounder than the current model. Some say it resembles a larger version of the Ford Edge crossover. The new Explorer will share a unibody platform with the 2010 Ford Taurus.
