Toyota chief contemplates Camry’s future

05/18/2010, 9:49 AM BY ANDREW GANZ

Toyota’s Camry sedan has been the automaker’s bread and butter offering in North America for more than two decades, but recent recall woes and increased competition have diminished the four-door’s luster to the point that Toyota president Akio Toyoda says he is concerned about the car’s future direction.

“Look at the Ford Taurus. It may be making a comeback. GM also has Camry fighters. And they’ve been done with a fun-to-drive touch. And Hyundai is coming up, and they’re looking good,” Toyoda told Automotive News. “So we have to start asking, ‘Can we just keep doing the Camry like this?’”

Toyoda, an accomplished closed track driver, has promised to make his company’s products more enjoyable to drive in the future – and his latest comments indicate that future Camry sedans might need to offer more than ever.

While the Camry’s sales haven’t really suffered despite the company’s massive recalls, Toyota’s family sedan is losing market share to rivals like Ford’s Fusion, Hyundai’s Sonata and Honda’s Accord. Through April, Accord has a narrow sales lead over Camry in the United States, while Fusion and Sonata have made massive ground over the last two years.

I think you mean Crown it was the full size nameplate I'd only maybe seen 3-4 before

Corona was the US market predecessor to the Camry, Cressida was the US market predecessor to the Avalon. Not sure if the Crown was ever sold in the US. They still make a Crown in Japan, a RWD sedan that looks a lot like a Camry.

translation - 'shut down the camry plant and build it elsewhere if you blame us too much for the pedal thing'

Translation...we don't have the imagination to build something that will compete in a free market against better product...

Crown was built for N/A markets late 50's then 64-73. It was dropped due to poor sales. Replaced by the Crona Mark II since it grew in size. Yes correct on the Cresseda. The Corona Mark II was renamed the Toyota Cressida for export markets, and was Toyota's largest sedan and wagon for North America and Australia.

Camry was a compact that replaced the Corona as you stated.
