NHTSA investigating Mercedes-Benz E-Class over airbag issue

05/18/2010, 4:26 PM BY DREW JOHNSON

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a new safety investigation involving Mercedes-Benz’ E-Class model. The probe was launched after it was discovered that some E-Class models could have been equipped with a defective airbag system.

According to the NHTSA, the investigation covers E-Class cars from the 2005 and 2006 model years. In all, the airbag defect could involve as many as 100,000 vehicles.

The NHTSA launched its investigation after receiving four complaints about a failure in the E-Class’ airbag wiring harness. If the wiring harness becomes damaged, it can cause the vehicle’s airbags to fail.

“If a customer puts that steering wheel at a very raised position, if your steering wheel is telescoped all the way up, the wiring harness may be a little too short,” Robert Moran, a Mercedes-Benz spokesman, told Bloomberg. “It is the kind of thing if your light went on and you went to the dealer, they would be able to rectify that.”

No injuries have been linked to the defect. Mercedes-Benz has not issued a recall for the potential defect, but one has not been ruled out.
