Chrysler not taking applications for Jefferson North jobs

Chrysler already has enough applicants for the 1,080 jobs it will add in July at the Jefferson North assembly plant, a company spokesperson said Sunday.

CEO Sergio Marchionne's announcement Friday that a second shift will be added at the plant on Detroit's east side triggered excitement in the company and widespread interest among jobseekers. Many of the latter have e-mailed and called the Free Press over the weekend asking how and where they could apply.

Chrysler's Web site has a link labeled Search for hourly openings. First it asks if you are seeking a job in the U.S. or Canada. Then it offers a menu of locations, one of which is "Michigan-Detroit." After clicking on the submit button the site generates the following message: "Sorry, there are no jobs available for the given location."

"We have enough people who have already applied," said Chrysler spokeswoman Shawn Morgan. The company is not discouraging other applicants from monitoring that site. As the economic gains strength, car and truck sales increase, there could be other factories that need to add people.

Chrysler can pay new hires for production work at an hourly wage of about $14, well below what experienced workers make. That was agreed to by the UAW in its 2007 national agreement with Chrysler, General Motors and Ford.
