Ford seeks more Explorer exports

FREE PRESS STAFF REPORTS

Ford is hoping that its redesigned Ford Explorer, to be revealed this summer, will continue to be popular overseas.

In 2009, 31% of the 75,876 Explorers built at Ford's Louisville, Ky., Assembly Plant were exported.

The SUV is popular in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Russia, said Jim Holland, chief engineer for the redesigned Ford Explorer.

Holland said Ford extensively tested the new Explorer in the Middle East to make sure its climate-control system would hold up in the heat.

Ford's redesigned Explorer will be built at Ford's Chicago Assembly Plant.
