FORD PLANNING 40 NEW JOBS TO SUPPORT EV OPERATIONS

-0By Drew Johnson

Ford will announce later today the addition of 40 new jobs at a Michigan factory to support the company’s electric vehicle plans, a new report finds. Ford president of the Americas Mark Fields is expected to make the announcement at a ceremony at the automaker’s Ypsilanti, Michigan engine plant.

Exact details surrounding the new jobs remains scarce, but the new positions will undoubtedly support Ford’s efforts to launch two new electric vehicles and two next-generation hybrids by 2012. By 2020, Ford expects EVs and hybrids to makeup 10-25 percent of its global sales.

Ford will launch its first mass-market EV later this year in the form of the Transit Connect. The zero-emissions small van will be aimed at fleet users in urban environments, replacing traditional full-size vans that guzzle fuel.

Following the 2010 market launch of the Transit Connect EV, Ford will launch an electric version of its Focus compact in 2011. Two new hybrid models will launch by 2012, possibly with plug-in capabilities.

Since 2006, Ford has reduced its North American workforce by about 47 percent.
