MAZDA3 DETHRONES HONDA CIVIC AS CANADIAN TOP SELLER

By Mark Kleis

Although Canadian’s have much in common with Americans, some things vary – often uniquely – including their tastes in automobiles. Based on analysis by three local (Canadian) outlets: Auto North, Canadian Driver and The Globe and Mail, Canadian taste may be switching from the more reserved Honda Civic to the mostly sporty appeal of the Mazda3 compact.

Canadian Driver points out that during the month of April the sport-minded Mazda3 took top honors for passenger vehicles sales, helping to push it past the long-standing sales king Honda Civic by just 103 units year-to-date. For 2010, the Mazda3 sits at a total of 17,198 units sold, Honda Civic at 17,095 and the Toyota Corolla comes in at a fairly distant third with 13,059 units.

Overall, much like the U.S., truck sales continue to dominate, with the Ford F-Series taking top honors with 27,514 units sold, followed by the Dodge Caravan with 18,518 units moved and then the Dodge Ram, GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado with 16,029, 13,140 and 11,391 units sold, respectively.

Although it is a bit early to officially declare the Civic’s reign as over, if market trends continue it appears as if Canada will have a new leader in their passenger car segment by year’s end.
