‘11 BMWS PARKED AT PORT, AWAITING SEAT PART

By Andrew Ganz

BMW confirmed that an undisclosed number of the its 2011 models are waiting patiently at ports in North America for a power seat module that was not installed at the automaker’s German factory due to a parts shortage.

The automaker told its dealers that the majority of its 2011 models built during two weeks in April were shipped without the component, but BMW says the gaffe was intentional because it planned to install the parts in North America. BMW hasn’t identified the supplier of the components, although it did confirm that the affected models are its 1, 3 and 7 Series, as well as its Z4 and 5-Series GT models.

“The transition to the model year 2011 has been challenging from a distribution perspective,” BMW said in the notice.

A BMW spokesman confirmed to Reuters that additional technicians have been tasked with installing the parts at the automaker’s distribution centers and that it hopes to clear the backlog early next month.
