Opel Named “Most Innovative Brand 2010”

Plus X Award 2010

New Meriva and new Astra win a total of seven categories

Opel honored as most innovative brand in automotive sector

Rüsselsheim/Cologne. The winners of the “Plus X Award 2010”, the world’s largest contest for technologies, sport and lifestyle products, were announced at an awards ceremony in Cologne. Opel played a starring role, with the Meriva winning the categories innovation, design, functionality and ergonomics, and the Astra also coming out on top in design, functionality and ergonomics. Thanks to these victories in a total of seven categories, Opel also received the “Most Innovative Brand 2010” award in the automotive sector, beating out automakers in the premium and sports car areas. The Meriva and Astra were also named “Best Product of the Year 2010” in their respective segments.

Over one thousand products were submitted for the Plus X Awards and were assessed by a 144-member jury hailing from 32 countries. Exceptional achievements in the categories innovation, quality, design, operating comfort, ergonomics and ecology were honored.

After the Opel Insignia was awarded the Seal of Quality for Innovations for its front camera in 2009, Opel has once again demonstrated its expertise with the Astra and Meriva. “I am very proud of these awards,” says Alain Visser, Vice President Sales, Marketing & Aftersales. “They show that our brand strengths like design and functionality are also recognized and commended by the neutral jurors of the Plus X Award. And this again confirms that ergonomics is also a plus point that plays an increasingly larger role.”

The new Meriva features a host of technical and practical innovations like rear-hinged rear doors called FlexDoors, the FlexSpace rear seating system and the FlexRail center console that can be individually configured. The flexible monocab celebrates its premiere on June 12 at Opel dealers, with prices starting at 15,900 euros in Germany.

In addition to its highlights in design, functionality and ergonomics, the new five-door Astra also sets standards in economy. With CO2 emissions of 109 g/km and combined consumption of just 4.1 liters per 100 km, the Astra 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX is one of the most economical cars in the compact class. Over 150,000 orders for the Opel Astra have been received throughout Europe.
