GM door handles in '07 Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon can slice, feds say

Of all things, the inside door handles on some General Motors trucks are under federal investigation. Seems the silver-colored plating on the handles in some 2007 and 2008 Chevrolet Tahoes and similar GMC Yukons have generated, by GM's count, 64 complaints of injuries.

Plating improperly applied by the supplier, GM says, can flake or sliver and slice into your hand.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it dug into the problem and found 90% of the complaints were coming from 2007 models, so last week NHTSA boosted it's preliminary evaluation, begun last fall, to an engineering analysis of the 2007 models.

In the safety world, an EA is a big deal. It's Step 2 in a process where Step 3 is a mandatory recall. And it also requires the automaker to dive deeper into the issue, boosting the cost of the probe for the car company, and eating into engineers' time to reply to NHTSA's technical questions.

The chrome plating on Fusion/Milan/MKZ/Zephyr inside door handles wrinkles and comes off on the edges, too, and has proven to be dangerous... it cuts fingers wide open.

The early 2000's Hyundai Sonata had that problem big time as well. Coating flexible plastic in metal is a rather dumb idea IMO, it also can't be much cheaper than chromed pot metal handles like most GM cars had in the 70's-80's.

NHTSA INVESTIGATES GM SUV DOOR HANDLES

By Andrew Ganz

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that, in response to 88 complaints about minor hand injuries, it has increased the level of its investigation into the door handles on 2007 models of General Motors’ Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon.

The complaints stem from metal-plated interior door handles that could delaminate and begin peeling off. Complaints have suggested that the peeling door handles can cut through skin.

A complaint sent in to NHTSA last summer said,” “I have had to teach my children how to avoid getting cuts. I have had the car for five days, and we have sustained cuts for five days. How long should this go on?”

NHTSA officially launched an investigation in December of 2009 but began a more in-depth “engineering analysis” late last month that could lead to a vehicle recall. The investigation is so far only centered on 2007 Tahoes and Yukons.
