REPORT: HONDA CROSSTOUR TO GET REINFORCED ROOF

Thanks to a poor performance in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s roof strength test, Honda is reportedly considering an early revamp and roof reinforcement for its Accord Crosstour wagon-like crossover.

The Crosstour performed the worst of several midsize SUVs and crossovers tested recently by the IIHS. While several more traditional ‘utes received the institute’s vaunted “Top Safety Pick” award, the Crosstour’s roof strength was rated “Marginal,” the second-to-lowest ranking available.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – NHTSA – says that the Crosstour’s rollover likelihood is quite low, however. In both front- and all-wheel-drive formats, the Accord Crosstour was granted four out of an available five stars. NHTSA test’s a vehicle’s evasive maneuver response, not its roof strength.

According to Inside Line, the Crosstour could get a titanium-reinforced roof in order to better protect its passenger compartment in the event of a rollover.
