RECALLED: 285K CHRYSLER MINIVANS WITH FIRE RISK

By Mark Kleis

Marking the second major recall for Chrysler this month, the automaker has now issued a new recall that covers 284,831 minivans which may have an improperly installed wiring harness.

As a result of the wiring harness being improperly routed during installation, it may be rubbing against the lower sliding door hinge bracket, which over time can wear through the wire’s rubber insulation and cause a short circuit. NHTSA says that in the event of a short circuit, it is possible that the latch could become overheated and start a vehicle fire.

The minivans that were affected were model year 2008 and 2009 Chrysler Town and Country minivans, as well as the Dodge Grand Caravan. Not all 2008-2009 Town and Country and Grand Caravans are included in the recall, as only the models built between February and September 2007 are potentially affected.

Chrysler will officially launch the recall and associated repairs this month – June 2010.
