Verizon puts out call for Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid

05:20 AM

General Motors isn't just selling its more fuel-efficient vehicles to individual customers. It's also making some inroads with corporate fleets.

Witness communications giant Verizon, which just bought 576 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrids.

Their two-mode hybrid systems get 21 miles a gallon in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway. The city mpg is almost as good as a four-cylinder engine in a sedan.

"A major part of our sustainability strategy is to make smart use of lower-carbon alternatives to power our fleet and the operation of our high-IQ broadband networks," said James Gowen, chief sustainability officer for Verizon.

All told, Verizon wants to add 1,600 alternative-powered vehicles. GM couldn't be more thrilled at the Siverado choice.

"When Verizon first approached us about environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles for their urban drivers, we knew the Silverado Hybrid was the perfect fit because of its outstanding city and highway MPG ratings," said Brian Small, GM Fleet and Commercial Operation general manager. "Immediately the team went to work to meet Verizon's ambitious July delivery deadline."

If you think GM is thrilled, consider that Verizon placed the entire order through a single dealership, Fairway Motors, a woman-owned Chevrolet dealership in Hazelton, Pa.

Verizon should get Transit Connects. Better mileage, and more space to advertise on the side of the vehicle. And you can get that computer in the dash board.

If they get some Ecoboost in the Transit that would be a pretty sweet ride.
