HYUNDAI SONATA HITS 5 MILLION SALES WORLDWIDE

By Andrew Ganz

Hyundai’s redesigned Sonata sedan is on a roll in the United States, having hit the 10th best seller spot last month. Yet it is actually the third Hyundai product to hit the important 5 million mark for overall global sales.

The Sonata is now in its sixth generation. All six generations have been sold in North America, although the rear-wheel-drive first generation was only offered in Canada, where it was named the Hyundai Stellar.

“The five million mark is a testament to Hyundai’s continuous quality improvement, technological advancement and differentiated design,” said Steve S. Yang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor, in a statement released to the media. “It’s Korea’s No. 1 sedan and now aims to be a game changer for the segment worldwide.”

About 2.7 million of the 5 million Sonatas sold worldwide wound up in the automaker’s home market of Korea. The United States received 1.3 million and the additional 1 million wound up spread out across the rest of the world
