Nissan opens center to train Leaf service technicians

DETROIT -- Nissan North America Inc. has opened a new technical training center in Livermore, Calif., to ensure a smooth sales launch for the Leaf -- the first modern-day fully electric car from a major automaker.

The center will provide product training for dealership technicians in the Northwest, which encompasses northern California, Colorado, Idaho, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming, Nissan said in a statement last week.

Nissan has received 14,000 reservations in the United States for the Leaf since April, when it began accepting $99 refundable deposits from customers to reserve a vehicle. The EV goes on sale in the United States in December. In Japan, Nissan has 6,000 reservations.

With a federal tax credit, the $32,780 sticker price of the Leaf falls to about $25,000. In California, another incentive will knock off an additional $3,000 or so.

The 23,000-square-foot California training center will provide courses in heating and cooling systems, chassis integrity, diagnostics, emissions and other areas, Nissan said.

Tim Gallagher, Nissan North America’s communications manager, says the center is opening at a perfect time.

“For dealers, that part of the country is where we are seeing hand-raisers for the Leaf,” said Gallagher. “Those are hotbeds for EVs.”

Another Nissan technical center is expected to open this fall in Ontario, Calif. There are now nine technical centers serving Nissan and Infiniti in the United States.

Nissan did not release the cost of the training center.
