Toyota promotes North American execs

Christine Tierney / The Detroit News

Toyota Motor Corp. has promoted several senior North American manufacturing executives as part of an effort to expand the ranks of its top regional managers.

Steve St. Angelo, Toyota's chief quality officer for North America and president of its big Georgetown, Ky., plant, has been appointed chairman. The promotion will permit him to spend less time on day-to-day plant operations and more on his broader oversight responsibilities.

Similarly, Ray Tanguay, president of Toyota's Cambridge, Ontario plant, has been appointed chairman.

"I am pleased we are designating more responsibility to a seasoned group of Toyota veterans," said Tetsuo Agata, president of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, based in Erlanger, Ky.

"These changes allow us to move faster and more efficiently in key decision-making," he said.

Prompted by the company's slow response to complaints in North America about its vehicles, Toyota has been reviewing its global organization and has said it plans to increase the autonomy of the regional operations.

Among the other appointments announced today, Brian Krinock will be president of the Ontario plant, and Wil James is the new president of the Kentucky plant.

Masafumi Hamaguchi was appointed president of the new Blue Springs, Miss., plant, effective Aug. 1, while St. Angelo will be chairman.

The other appointments take effect July 1. Norm Bafunno is the new president of the Princeton, Ind., plant, replacing Kazumori Oi, who will remain as an adviser. Chris Nielsen has been tapped to be president of the San Antonio, Texas, plant, replacing Kenji Fukuta.

Karl Kusturok was appointed vice president of production engineering at Toyota's North American manufacturing operations, while Phil Rodi will be vice president of manufacturing in Ontario.
