Toyota began producing V-6 engines for the first time at its plant in Huntsville, Ala., according to a news release.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama (TMMAL), which employs more than 500 people, has the capacity to produce 120,000 V-8 and 130,000 V-6 engines annually, the company said.

TMMAL opened in May 2003 and supplies V-8 engines for the Tundra pickup and Sequoia sport-utility vehicles produced in Indiana.

The V-6 engines will be used for Tacoma pickup trucks made in Fremont, California and Baja California, Mexico as well as the Tundra. TMMAL will also provide V-8 and V-6 engines for a Tundra plant opening next year in San Antonio, Texas.
