HYUNDAI NAMES NEW PRODUCT PLANNER

By Drew Johnson

After a two-year vacancy, Hyundai has finally named a vice president of product and corporate planning. That role has been empty since John Krafcik left the position in 2008 to become company CEO.

Michael O’Brien will be taking over Krafcik’s former post. Hyundai hired O’Brien away from Toyota, where he had been a manager within Toyota’s corporate planning division for the last 14 years. O’Brien’s most recent projects include Toyota’s U.S. van, truck and SUV product strategies. O’Brien also has experience with powertrain, advanced technology vehicles and regulatory planning, according to Automotive News.

O’Brien is also familiar with Hyundai, having worked in the automaker’s planning, parts and marketing departments before leaving for Toyota.

“It’s great to have Mike O’Brien back on the Hyundai team,” Krafcik said in a statement. “Mike’s a real car guy with strong technical credentials, yet he’s also a smart and passionate business leader. That’s a rare skill set.”

O’Brien will play a key role in the growth of Hyundai’s future vehicle lineup.
