NEXT CHEVROLET COLORADO IMAGES LEAKED?

By Mark Kleis

A series of sketches have been leaked from a U.S. Patent Office, and they appear to be of a compact pickup – making them a likely candidate for the next Chevrolet Colorado.

The front fascia of the sketches appears to be a a very close match for the current Chevrolet Equinox crossover, adding credibility to the images being of a near-future model. The patent for the images listed several names from South America, as well as two in Detroit, Michigan, according to GM InsideNews, which first found the images.

Given that GM has given indications that future small truck development would come from south of the equator, it makes sense that the majority of those involved in designing this truck would be from Brazil. Where things become unclear, however, is what truck this is exactly, and for which markets?

Some sources at GMI believe that there will be a replacement for the Colorado for the U.S. market, but many other sources have cast doubt on the future of a small truck in the U.S. With Ford abandoning the segment, it might prove a perfect opportunity for GM to snatch up market share left by the Ranger, or GM may choose to follow suit and focus on full-size offerings with larger profit margins.

Also to be considered is where GM might produce the next Colorado, as the plant that currently builds the Colorado truck is set to be abandoned as part of GM’s bankruptcy, and the other alternative is the Spring Hill, Tennessee, plant, which currently sits idle. GMI sources have also caught wind of possible die kits for a “new small truck” set to arrive for testing in Spring Hill in late 2010.

Whether or not these images represent the next small truck for American, or South American consumption, one thing is for sure: the images are an accurate representation of a future small truck from General Motors.

Patent drawings reveal new Chevrolet small pickup... but is it for North America?

by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Jun 30th 2010 at 1:36PM

Patent drawings for a small Chevy pickup – Click above for high-res image gallery

Chevrolet designers have had some fun with the company Etch-a-Sketch and came up with this, then filed the drawings with the patent office. Any details identifying its place in the Chevy lineup or in the automaker's global marketplace were sadly left out of the filing.

Carscoop theorizes that it could be an update for the South American market, or a long-shot replacement for the Colorado. At right is a single-cab Chevy Colorado, whose door handles and greenhouse are close to the patent drawing.

However, beneath that is a Brazilian-market 2009 Chevy S10 Colina, whose taillights are a much better match for the patent drawing. Swapping its front end for the Cruze-ish grille in the filing might be more reasonable than performing the same swap on a Colorado, or maybe not. What's really got us wondering are those exposed bed-rail tie-downs, which look like something from an early eighties Toyota. Or a Mahindra Pik-up. What truck and what market are looking for those?

Have a look at the high-res filings yourself and feel free to make all the guesses you want.
