Phelan's corner: Ford Falcon in Australia

The Ford Falcon had a short and undistinguished life in the U.S., but it's alive, well and better than you'd believe possible in Australia.

In America, the Falcon was a compact Ford introduced in 1960 to challenge the VW Beetle, which was beginning to attract American customers. The U.S. Falcon was never particularly successful. Ford dropped it in 1970.

In contrast, the Falcon just celebrated 50 years of success in Australia. The car has morphed into a modern full-size sedan that's an Australian icon. Ford Australia has sold a total of 3.5 million Falcons since Ford began building it in the Melbourne suburb of Geelong in June 1960. The Australian Falcon is now in its seventh generation.

Today, the Falcon comes as a sedan or a Ranchero-type sporty pickup. Engine choices include a 360-horsepower, turbocharged 4.0-liter straight-six.
