Lexus to recall 138,000 models over faulty engines

By Mark Kleis

Lexus has announced its intention to recall approximately 138,00 vehicles in the U.S., affecting model years 2006 through 2008 with certain engines.

Although Lexus says that the likelihood of people experiencing an issue due to the faulty valve springs is only .2 percent, and no accidents or injuries have been reported, the automaker will still remedy the known issue.

The problem stems from a contaminated valve spring which can fail and alter engine idle and performance. the engines included in the U.S. recall are the 4.6-liter and 5.0-liter V8s, as well as the 3.5-liter V6.

Breakdown of affected models by model year:

2006 – IS 350

2007 – GS 350, GS 450h, IS 350, LS 460, LS 460 L

2008 – GS 350, GS 450h, IS 350, LS 460, LS 460 L, LS 600h L

Lexus advised that owners of the affected vehicles can continue to drive them, but if they notice abnormal vibration, rough idling, unusual engine sounds or poor performance, that their vehicle should be brought to their nearest dealer for service.

Lexus intends to file the formal report during the week of July 5, 2010.
