1980 Buick Electra Promotional Video

Why would you continually promote fuel economy for a car that is 17 feet long? If the buyers were worried about fuel economy, they'd go buy a little Honda or Toyota... oh wait, most buyers in the 1980s did that. On a related note, if that lady was concerned about fuel economy, she could have just kept riding her horse. A horse is much more fuel efficient than a Buick, and meets California emissions.

I think it is funny that the 4.1 V6 was not available in California, how bad of a polluter must that thing have been? I'm glad we got rid of velour seats, those things were horrible.

That they were, but look at how the market share of honda and toyota grew in the 80s and 90s. People fled Detroit's 18 foot long cars, and Detroit was too slow to respond with similar product. So in a stage of denial, they just tried to promote how fuel efficient their land barges were. Sort of funny, and of course we now know that was a poor strategy long term.

Detroit responded, but the products they responded with were mostly junk...Cavaliers, K-cars, etc.
