2011 BMW 6-Series Convertible

By Drew Johnson

Hinting at its athletic nature, our spy photographers have just sent us images of BMW’s 2011 6-Series convertible at the famed Nurburgring. With styling influenced by BMW’s recent GranCoupe concept, expect the new 6-Series convertible to launch sometime in 2011.

Like its fixed-roof counterpart, the next 6-Series convertible doesn’t appear to stray too far from the design of the current model, however, this 2011 prototype does look a bit sleeker as well as slightly longer and wider than the car you currently find on dealer lots. There is also rumor that the car’s controversial (to some) styling has been toned down, and instead the car has been given a more Aston Martin-esque design language.

From the spy photos is also appears as if the stance of the 6-Series convertible has been dropped – giving it a sportier feel and look. BMW is said to have wanted to go after a more mainstream buyer, and is looking to appeal to traditional sports car buyers with its changes.

One major change we can count on will be the addition of BMW’s new 8-speed transmission. The motor lineup is surrounded by conflicting reports, with some suggesting it could solider on mostly unchanged, including the 6-Series’ V10 M option. Other reports suggest that BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8 will make the move to the 6-Series lineup, with a turbocharged six-cylinder likely to be offered in the base car.

The BMW 6-Series coupe is expected to debut at next year’s Geneva Motor Show, but it remains unclear if the convertible variant will also be on hand at the March show.
