Nissan Unveils World-First Electro-Hydraulic Brake And Steering Systems

Nissan has been on a roll lately in regards to its technology launches, with the Japanese automaker in the past couple of weeks showing off a range of new fuel saving technologies it plans to launch over the coming year, as well as a pair of very advanced ‘downsized’ engines.

Now Nissan is raising the automotive technology bar even further with the announcement of two world-first technologies: Electro-hydraulic Power Steering and Electric Driven Intelligent Brakes. The benefits of the technology not only boost environmental performance, but also high parts integration, responsive steering and braking, along with more accurate and natural feeling electronically assisted steering.

For the first time in the world, an Electro-hydraulic Power Steering system has been adopted in which the motor is activated only when the driver is steering. Essentially, it offers the advantages of both types of steering--the natural and smooth steering of hydraulic power steering and the improved fuel efficiency of electric power steering.

The Electric Driven Intelligent Brake, on the other hand, is designed for hybrid vehicles and uses their electric motor to directly operate the brake cylinders. When the driver steps on the brake pedal, the necessary braking force is maintained while the hydraulic pressure of the friction brake is controlled to help maximize energy regeneration. The good news is that it can be applied to various future hybrid vehicles.

The new systems are scheduled to debut in the U.S. on the 2011 Infiniti M early next year.
